In the Corner with Dan Hughes

Aug 11, 2011

Do you use a donut on your bat before you step into the batter's box?

If so, you are costing yourself three to five miles per hour with your swing.
Listen to this show to find out why.

Great article Dan. You are correct that swinging with a weighted bat does actually slow bat speed when you step into the batters box. I have witnessed on television many major leaguers in the on deck circle swing with the pitch as if they were at the bat without additional weight.

Yep, but I see a lot of guys using them outside the dugout, just before they step into the on-deck circle.

And FYI, every association has banned the donut from the on-deck circle, including ASA, USSSA, NSA, ISA and Senior Softball USA.
